Bellingham se situe à la frontière du Canada, au Sud de Vancouver, au bord d’une baie sur l’Océan Pacifique, au Nord-Ouest de l’Etat de Washington. Cette région est le berceau de la tribu Nooksack et Lummi. Sur une population d’environ 98’000 habitants, 800 à 1’000 personnes sont sans-abris. Une partie souffrent d’addiction au fentanyl, mais un grand pourcentage sont des gens qui travaillent dur et n’ont juste pas les moyens de payer un loyer. La radio communautaire KMRE s’est penchée sur la question et a conduit une série d’interviews sur le sujet. Aussi, un de leur podcast est consacré à la Palestine avec Clarissa.
Bellingham is located on the border with Canada, just south of Vancouver, British Columbia. This city is adjacent to the bay, in the Northwest of Washington State just above Seattle. It is the homeland of the Nooksack and Lummi tribes. Of a population of about 98’000, 800 to 1’000 people are homeless. Some of them suffer from addiction to fentanyl, but many are working poor who cannot afford rent. The community radio station KMRE 88.3 FM conducted a series of interviews on the subject.

Clarissa est bibliothécaire à l’Université de Western Washington à Bellingham. Elle s’est sentie très affectée par le génocide qui sévit en Palestine. Elle a créé des liens d’amitié forts avec huit familles de Gaza. Elle communique avec eux tous les jours et s’organise ici à Bellingham pour récolter des fonds à leur intention. Les membres de ces familles souffrent de famine. Ils sont parfois vingt et ont besoin de jusqu’à $150 par jour pour se nourrir. Dans ce podcast, Clarissa nous parle de leurs conditions de vie. Grace à son aide, un de ses amis nommé Mohammed, a reçu une bourse à l’Université où elle travaille. Il est maintenant en attente d’une autorisation d’Israel pour quitter Gaza.
Clarissa is a librarian at Western Washington University. She felt extremely affected and upset by the genocide that is going on in Palestine. She created strong friendships with eight families in Gaza and communicates with them every day. She is now working hard to raise funds that would help them survive. They are all suffering from famine. In this podcast Clarissa talks about their daily life in Gaza. One of them, Mohammed, has been accepted to Western Washington University and was granted a scholarship. He now needs the authorization to leave Palestine.

A six-year-old child is hiding in a car. Tanks are surrounding her. She is frightened. A team from the Red Crescent is trying to send out an ambulance to go save her. Meanwhile, they attempt to reassure her by phone.

Un film profondément humain sur une famille palestinienne. On suit leur évolution sur plusieurs générations. Ils perdent leurs terres. Ils sont humiliés. Le père de famille enseigne à l’école primaire en plein blocus israélien. On le voit ému par la beauté de la poésie Arabe et la magie de l’imagination. Á un moment il se sent coupable de ne pas prendre les armes pour se défendre. Un imam lui répond: “Votre humanisme est une forme de résistance”.
A profoundly poetic film that follows a Palestinian family over three generations. They lose their land. They are humiliated. The father teaches to school children who are living among the Israeli blockades. He is admirative of Arabic poetry and wants these schoolchildren to understand the power of imagination. In one scene we see him embarrassed for not having resorted to armed struggle. But an Imam responds to him: “Your humanism is a form of resistance.”

Interview avec Tammy Woodrich de la tribu Nooksack / Interview with Tammy Woodrich elder from the Nooksack tribe
Tammy Woodrich est une aînée de la tribu Nooksack. Elle a hérité de ses ancêtres la maîtrise de l’art du conte. Beaucoup des traditions amérindiennes sont transmises oralement. La fille de Tammy maîtrise aussi l’art du conte.
Une proportion alarmante de la population autoctonne est affectée par la pauvreté et plusieurs jeunes quittent les réserves et deviennent sans-abris. Tammy nous en parle.
Tammy Woodrich is an elder of the Nooksack tribe. She has mastered the art of storytelling, a skill she has inherited from her ancestors. Her daughter, having learned from her, is a gifted storyteller as well. Much of Native American traditions are transmitted orally.
A frightening proportion of the indigenous population suffers from poverty. Some native adolescents leave their community and become homeless. Tammy talks to us about this crisis.
Interviews avec Doug and Tinna/ Interview with Doug and Tina founder of the first tiny home village in Bellingham
Pour faire face à la crise du logement, des habitants de Bellingham se sont battus pour mettre sur pied un village de tiny-homes, voir photos. Tinna était une personne sans-abris. Elle est devenue la maire de ce village et Doug est une des personnes qui s’est battus à ses côtés. Le village initial a été déplacé au nord de la ville. Il s’est agrandi et des douches et toilettes ont été installées. Les habitants s’entraident pour offrir un soutien psychologique et social de pairs-aidants entre eux. Beaucoup de ces personnes ont vécu à la rue et souffrent de traumatisme sévère qui s’expriment parfois par des crises de paniques.
Faced with the affordability and housing crisis, residents of Bellingham got together to create a tiny home village in Fairhaven. Tina was one of them. She was a homeless person who became mayor of this village. Doug was also one of those who helped her fight for its creation. Doug is a successful computer engineer with his own business. In August 2025, this village was moved to a bigger space. It now has bathrooms and showers and is a model for other tiny homes across the state of Washington. The villagers help each other out to deal with their trauma and find employment.

Interview avec Hans Erchinger-Davis, directeur d’un centre pour sans-abri/ Interview with Hans Erchinger-Davis director of the Lighthouse Mission
Le Lighthouse Mission possède plusieurs établissements dans la ville, tous en appui aux personnes sans domicile fix. Un des programmes qu’ils animent aident leur membre à arrêter la drogue. Une cérémonie importante est organisée pour fêter la réussite de ceux qui finissent leur parcours et deviennent abstinents. Hans nous parle de son travail.
